Where It Is
From Fort Myers Beach, head north off the island and follow Summerlin Road west to the Sanibel Causeway. Once you cross, Periwinkle Way and Sanibel-Captiva Road take you across Sanibel and up to Captiva at the far end.
What to expect
- Lighthouse Beach at the east tip, home to the historic Sanibel Lighthouse and calm bay-side water
- Bowman’s Beach, a longer walk from the parking lot that pays off with a wide, uncrowded stretch of sand
- Blind Pass, where Sanibel meets Captiva, one of the best spots on the islands for shelling
- Turner Beach on the Captiva side of Blind Pass, a local favorite for sunset
- Captiva Beach at the north end of Captiva, with big Gulf views and a laid-back village nearby
- The causeway beaches, small islands along the bridge where you can park right by the water
Good to know
- Go early: parking lots fill by late morning in winter
- Check the tide chart and shell at low tide, especially the morning after a storm
- Only take empty shells; collecting live shells is not allowed
- Bring a mesh bag or bucket, water shoes, and plenty of sunscreen
- Have your phone ready to pay for parking by app at the public lots

Cool fronts and winter tides push shells onto the beach. This is the busiest time on the islands, so go early.

Warmer water, lighter traffic on the causeway, and easier parking. Great for a relaxed beach day.

Hot days and afternoon storms, but quiet beaches and some of the best sunsets of the year. Go in the morning.

How far is Sanibel from Fort Myers Beach?
About 25 minutes to the first beaches on Sanibel, and 45 minutes or more to reach Captiva at the far end. Winter traffic on the causeway can add time, so leave early.
Is there a toll to get to Sanibel?
Yes. There's a toll on the Sanibel Causeway, collected on the way onto the island. The drive back to the mainland is free.
How much is parking at Sanibel beaches?
Most public beach lots charge by the hour, around $5, and you pay by app or at the kiosk. Bring your phone and arrive early in season, when lots fill up.
Can I keep the shells I find on Sanibel?
You can keep empty shells. Taking live shells, anything with a living animal inside, isn't allowed, so check each one before it goes in the bag.
What is the difference between Sanibel and Captiva?
Sanibel is the bigger island, with bike paths, nature preserves, and most of the beaches. Captiva is the smaller island at the north end, with a tiny walkable village and wide sunset views.
