BLIND PASS BEACH

Best Shelling on Sanibel | Fishing | Gulf Sunsets

Blind Pass Beach sits at the north end of Sanibel Island, right where a narrow channel separates Sanibel from neighboring Captiva Island. The moving water in that channel carries in more shells than almost anywhere on Sanibel. On a good morning after a storm, the sand is covered: whelks, cockles, scallops, and, if you’re lucky, a junonia, the prize every shell hunter is after. It’s about 50 minutes from our Fort Myers Beach rentals, so make it a full Sanibel day. Shell at Blind Pass in the morning, grab lunch nearby, and stay for one of the best sunsets in Southwest Florida.

Where It Is

Cross the Sanibel Causeway, turn right on Periwinkle Way, and follow Sanibel-Captiva Road all the way up the island. The beach park is just before the small bridge to Captiva. If the lot is full, try Turner Beach right across the bridge.

What to expect

  • Search for shells at the water’s edge, where the pass pushes them ashore
  • Cast a line: Blind Pass is a well-known spot for snook and other fish
  • Walk across the bridge to Turner Beach on neighboring Captiva Island
  • Watch for dolphins moving through the pass with the tide
  • Stay for sunset, when the Gulf lights up right in front of you

Good to know

  • Go at low tide, and early, especially the morning after a cold front or storm
  • The current in the pass is strong; swim on the open Gulf side, away from the channel
  • The lot is small, so have Turner Beach in mind as a backup
  • Only take empty shells; live shells must stay on the beach
  • Restrooms are at Turner Beach across the bridge, not at Blind Pass itself

common questions

BLIND PASS BEACH FAQ

Where is Blind Pass Beach?
About 50 minutes, a bit more in winter traffic. Pair it with lunch on the island to make the drive worth it.
Is Blind Pass the best shelling beach on Sanibel?
It's one of the best. The tide moving through the pass keeps bringing new shells in, so it's a favorite for serious shellers.
When is the best time to shell at Blind Pass?
Low tide, early in the morning, and especially after a storm or cold front. Winter usually brings the best finds.
Can you swim at Blind Pass?
Be careful. The current in the pass is swift and there are no lifeguards. If you want to swim, stay on the open Gulf side away from the channel, or go to a calmer beach.
Is there parking at Blind Pass?
Yes, a small paid lot, about $5 an hour by app. It fills quickly, so arrive early or try the Turner Beach lot across the bridge.
Can you fish at Blind Pass?
Yes. The pass is a popular fishing spot. Florida requires a saltwater fishing license for most anglers, so get one before you go.
Can I rent for a month or longer?
Yes. A lot of our winter guests settle in for a month or more, and homes like Batiki West 609 and Island Reef 204 are set up for exactly that. Winter dates go first, so reach out early if you're eyeing January through March.
