Lovers Key State Park

Quiet Beaches | Kayaking | Dolphins & Manatees

Just south of Fort Myers Beach, past the last bridge on Estero Boulevard, Lovers Key is a string of small barrier islands that were never built up. The beach stretches for more than two miles with no condos behind it, and the back bays are full of mangroves, manatees, and wading birds. It feels a world away, even though it’s only minutes from the island. From our south-end condos at GullWing Beach Resort, it’s about a 10-minute drive, close enough for a sunrise walk, a morning paddle, or a quiet afternoon when the main beach feels busy.

Where It Is

Drive south on Estero Boulevard past the end of Fort Myers Beach and over the bridges toward Bonita Springs. The park entrance is on your left. From the parking lots, the beach is a short walk over a footbridge.

What to expect

  • Walk or swim along more than two miles of quiet, undeveloped beach
  • Rent a kayak or paddleboard and explore the mangrove backwaters
  • Look for manatees and dolphins in the canals and bays
  • Hike or bike the trails on Black Island through coastal hammock
  • Bring binoculars for herons, ospreys, roseate spoonbills, and more
  • Hunt for shells on the beach, especially after windy days

Good to know

  • The tram no longer runs, so plan on walking to the beach: about 1,000 feet from the first lot over the wooden bridge
  • There’s no food or drink service in the park, so pack lunch, snacks, and plenty of water
  • Bring a wagon or beach cart if you have chairs and coolers
  • Arrive early on winter weekends, when the lots can fill
  • Paddle in the morning, when the water is calm and wildlife is most active

It's right next door. From the south end of Fort Myers Beach, it's about a 10-minute drive over the bridges on Estero Boulevard.
How much does it cost to get into Lovers Key?
Entry is $8 per vehicle for two to eight people, $4 for a single person in a car, and $2 if you walk or bike in.
Is there still a tram at Lovers Key?
No. The tram has been discontinued, so the beach is reached on foot or by bike. The closest access is about 1,000 feet from the first parking lot.
Can you see manatees at Lovers Key?
Often, yes, especially in the cooler months when they move into the calm back bays. Paddling quietly through the canals gives you the best chance.
Can I rent a kayak at Lovers Key?
Yes. Kayaks, paddleboards, and beach gear can be rented in the park, and the calm backwaters are good for beginners.
Can I rent for a month or longer?
Yes. A lot of our winter guests settle in for a month or more, and homes like Batiki West 609 and Island Reef 204 are set up for exactly that. Winter dates go first, so reach out early if you're eyeing January through March.
