LIGHTHOUSE BEACH – SANIBEL ISLAND

Sanibel Lighthouse | Shelling | Calm Bay & Gulf Views

At the very east tip of Sanibel, an iron lighthouse from the 1880s still stands over the beach, and it’s the first thing you see when you come over the causeway. Lighthouse Beach wraps around that point, with the Gulf on one side and San Carlos Bay on the other, so you get calm water, shells at your feet, and boats drifting past all day.

It’s the closest Sanibel beach to our Fort Myers Beach rentals, about 25 minutes away. That makes it the easiest Sanibel day: cross the causeway, park, and you’re on the sand before the coffee wears off.

Where It Is

Cross the Sanibel Causeway and turn left onto Periwinkle Way. Follow it east to the end of the road, where the lighthouse and beach park sit at the tip of the island. It’s the first stop on Sanibel, so you’ll beat the traffic heading farther out.

What to expect

  • See the Sanibel Lighthouse, standing at the island’s tip since the 1880s
  • Walk the shoreline on both the Gulf and bay sides of the point
  • Look for shells, especially at low tide along the Gulf side
  • Watch for dolphins, pelicans, and passing boats in the channel

Good to know

  • Arrive by mid-morning in winter to find parking
  • The current near the point can be strong, so swim on the calmer bay side with kids
  • The fishing pier has been closed for repairs; check before bringing rods
  • There’s no food on site, so pack lunch and drinks
  • Stay for late afternoon, when the light on the lighthouse is at its best

common questions

LIGHTHOUSE BEACH – SANIBEL ISLAND FAQ

How far is Lighthouse Beach from Fort Myers Beach?
About 25 minutes. It's the first beach you reach after crossing the Sanibel Causeway, so it's the quickest Sanibel trip from our rentals.
How much is parking at Lighthouse Beach?
Parking is about $5 an hour, paid by app. Lots fill up in winter, so earlier is better.
Can you go inside the Sanibel Lighthouse?
No, the lighthouse isn't open for climbing, but you can walk right up to its base and take in the view from the beach around it.
Is Lighthouse Beach good for kids?
Yes. There are restrooms, short walks, and calmer water on the bay side. Keep little ones away from the point, where the current can pick up.
Is the Sanibel fishing pier open?
The pier has been closed for repairs, and the city is planning a replacement. If fishing is part of your plan, check its status before you go.
Can I rent for a month or longer?
Yes. A lot of our winter guests settle in for a month or more, and homes like Batiki West 609 and Island Reef 204 are set up for exactly that. Winter dates go first, so reach out early if you're eyeing January through March.
