DOWNTOWN FT. MYERS

Riverfront Dining | Art Walk | Historic Downtown

Downtown Fort Myers is where the city started, and it still has the brick streets, palm-lined blocks, and early 1900s storefronts to prove it. Locals call it the River District, after the wide Caloosahatchee River that runs along its edge, and it’s where Southwest Florida goes for a dinner out, a show, or a slow walk by the water.

It’s about 35 minutes from our Fort Myers Beach rentals, which makes it an easy evening plan. Spend the day at the beach, then drive in for dinner on First Street, a gallery or two, and the sunset over the river.

Where It Is

From Fort Myers Beach, cross the bridge and take McGregor Boulevard north. It runs past the Edison & Ford Winter Estates and straight into downtown. The River District sits between the Edison and Caloosahatchee bridges, with First Street as its main stretch.

What to expect

  • Walk First Street and the side blocks, where historic buildings now hold restaurants, bars, galleries, and small shops
  • Sit by the river at Centennial Park, the waterfront green space at the edge of downtown
  • See a play at Florida Repertory Theatre, set in one of downtown’s restored historic buildings
  • Catch an exhibit or concert at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center, a former federal building with columns you can’t miss
  • Look for the murals and public art tucked into alleys and along building walls
  • Watch the boats come and go at the downtown marina, then stay for sunset over the Caloosahatchee

Good to know

  • Street parking is metered during the day but free on weekday evenings and all weekend on the main streets
  • On Art Walk and Music Walk nights, the garages are the easier bet, so arrive early
  • Make dinner reservations for Friday and Saturday nights in winter season
  • The blocks are compact and flat, so park once and walk everywhere
  • Bring a light layer for evenings by the water from December through February

What is the Fort Myers River District?
It's the local name for historic Downtown Fort Myers, the walkable blocks between the Edison and Caloosahatchee bridges. It's the oldest part of the city, and today it's full of restaurants, bars, galleries, theaters, and waterfront parks.
When is the Fort Myers Art Walk?
The first Friday of every month, from 6 to 10pm. Galleries open their doors, artists set up along the streets, and there's live music and food throughout the district. It's free to walk.

The third Friday of every month, from 6 to 10pm. Bands and street performers play all over downtown, from jazz and blues to rock and Latin, and it's free to join in.
Is there a farmers market in Downtown Fort Myers?
Yes. The River District Farmers Market runs every Thursday morning, year-round, under the Caloosahatchee Bridge at Centennial Park. It's a good stop for local produce, baked goods, and plants before a beach afternoon.

Just a few minutes south on McGregor Boulevard. It's an easy pairing: tour Thomas Edison's and Henry Ford's winter homes and gardens in the afternoon, then drive into the River District for dinner.
