Helen, GA
Alpine Village | Chattahoochee River | Oktoberfest
Bavarian charm meets Blue Ridge beauty, Helen is the North Georgia mountains at their most whimsical — an entire alpine village of gingerbread style architecture, authentic German taverns, and colorful inner tubes floating lazily down the Chattahoochee River. It’s a 30-minute drive from our Clayton cabins, which makes it an easy day trip for bratwurst and shopping with the evening left for the quiet of the woods.

Where It Is
GA-75 north from Cleveland, about 90 minutes from Atlanta. The downtown lots are paid and fill early on Oktoberfest weekends.
What to expect
- An Alpine-style Main Street with Bavarian storefronts, beer gardens, and shops, all walkable in about 20 minutes
- Tubing on the Chattahoochee right through the middle of town, a lazy one- to two-hour float
- Anna Ruby Falls, a pair of twin waterfalls at the end of a short paved trail about 4 miles outside town
- Wineries scattered through the surrounding valley, most within a 15-minute drive
Good to know
- Oktoberfest weekends book out months ahead, so lock in dates early
- Tubing generally runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and the river runs cold, so wear water shoes
- Anna Ruby Falls charges a small per-person entry fee
- Parking is easiest before 10am. After that, park once and walk everything
When to Go
September – October
Oktoberfest takes over the village, and by late October the ridges around town turn color. Book early, and expect traffic on GA-75 every weekend.
May – August
Tubing season on the Chattahoochee, long evenings on Main Street, and warm afternoons at Anna Ruby Falls. Weekends are busy, but weekdays are easy.
January – March
Empty sidewalks, the lowest rates of the year, and waterfalls running full after winter rain. Pair it with a slow morning by the cabin fireplace.

Helen,GA FAQ
HOW FAR IS HELEN FROM CLAYTON, GA?
About 45 minutes. Take US-76 west, then GA-17 south to GA-75, a scenic mountain drive the whole way. Plan on extra time on fall weekends, when traffic backs up coming into town.
DO I NEED TICKETS FOR OKTOBERFEST?
Yes. Admission to the Festhalle is paid at the door, and the price is higher on weekends. The village itself is free to walk. For a Saturday visit, arrive before noon to find parking.
IS HELEN GOOD FOR KIDS?
Very. Tubing on the Chattahoochee, candy and fudge shops on Main Street, mini golf, and the short paved trail to Anna Ruby Falls all work well for families. Weekdays are calmer if you have little ones.
Can I bring my dog?
Yes. Leashed dogs are welcome on the downtown sidewalks, at Unicoi State Park, and on the Anna Ruby Falls trail. Most tubing outfitters don’t allow dogs, and the Oktoberfest crowds can be a lot for them.
